You may have been unpleasantly surprised if you recently looked into obtaining travel insurance for newborns and toddlers. You would assume that all you have to do is ask your insurance company about what coverage to get and that would be that. Well, unfortunately, it is not quite that simple.
One thing to consider is if separate travel insurance is really necessary. It is understandable that if you already have a policy from your credit card company for instance, that covers you or you and your spouse only. You will not want to incur extra expense by getting another plan that includes newborns and toddlers. Often, employers carry travel insurance for employees that does not include family members. In that case it does make sense to buy a policy just for the children.
Children’s travel insurance is a specialty so not all providers can offer it to you. Most companies want a parent to be on the policy as well so it will be necessary to shop; not only for a company that provides it but also for specific policy features and pricing. The pricing part is the easiest because insuring children for travel costs less than comparable coverage for adults; sometimes as little as $20 per child for a single trip. If more than one trip is planned for the year, it is a good idea to purchase a multi trip policy to preserves the same very low rates.
The features you want from a travel policy that covers newborns and toddlers are not the same as you want for yourself. There is no reason to pay extra to protect a baby from loss of income or lost luggage or any number of policy options that would be of little or no use. Likewise, you should be wary of complications regarding obscure items like events caused by risky or intentionally negligent behavior. These things do not apply. Stick to the basics. Make sure that you understand the exclusions and make sure that the policy covers everything that you want covered but no less.
A basic travel insurance plan for children should provide coverage for a few fundamental concerns. Naturally you want protection from any medical emergencies that might arise especially while traveling abroad. Many American policies will not. It is important to include the cost of emergency and other transportations situations in the coverage. Another often overlooked expense is the cost of returning home after a serious illness or injury. If special conditions are necessary, that could cost a fortune.
Shop for the company that offers travel insurance for your baby with the features you want and with no frills.
